Achmelvich
Ordnance Survey Landranger 15 Grid Reference NC 058252.
Fifty minute drive from Cairncroft.
A favourite for its beauty and seclusion. The main beach is sometimes
(relatively) well populated, but a short walk north up the coast leads
to a smaller quiter beach, which is generally clean, with gorgeous turquoise
waters. This beach (and Clashnessie) is just around the coast from Lochinver
(petrol, shops, restaurant, Highland Stoneware pottery, groceries).

Achnahaird
Ordnance Survey Landranger 15 Grid Reference NC 016135.
Fifty minute drive from Cairncroft. Ten miles off the A835 on the single
track Achiltibue road.
A beautiful quiet beach with fantastic mountain views, and plenty of
sand dunes.
Sandwood Bay
Bev's
Walking page has a good summary of the route.
See also the Undiscovered
Scotland page. Sandwood Bay is an enchanted place, remote even by
Highland standards, but a more beautiful beach would be hard to find
anywhere, combining miles of golden sand, cliffs and a sea stack An
outstanding day out.
It is no longer possible to drive down
the track, and cars must be left in a car park by the road, adding significantly
to the distance, and ruling this trip out for most younger children.
