The author personally recommends :
Bonar
Bridge (9)
An unpretentious nine hole course,
set on the hill above the town. The course is interesting, and the setting
superb, with some fine views of the Kyle of Sutherland and the inland
hills.
Golspie
(18)
This course is more difficult than its nearest neighbour at
Brora. The main hazard is the heather that borders some of the fairways,
which is nigh on impossible to play from.
Brora
(18)
A traditional James Braid links course, set between
hill and sea. A relatively straight-forward course, with unfrightening
rough, and the occasional burn to cross. The main hazards are the livestock
(and their doings), and (for men) managing to avoid getting your goolies
fried as you negotiate the circle of electric wire protecting the greens.
A fun course, which won't embarrass those with a usual handicap of fifty.
Tain
(18)
Ullapool
(9)
A new (1998) professionally designed nine hole course, on the shores
of Loch Broom. A superb setting. Has both a links and moorland feel.
Gairloch
(9)
If you're in Gairloch, dump the kids on the beach (preferably
with some adult supervision) and take to the neighbouring links.
Another beautiful west coast setting.
