Activities for Children
|
|
| Children (and their parents) who require a holiday based around an Amusement
Park, Leisure Centre, Swimming Pool, Cinema, Toys R Us and/or MacDonalds
will presumably be heading for Florida. The crofting village of Altass makes
no attempt to compete! Inverness (an hour's drive away) is the nearest place
to get your fix of some of these things.Cairncroft is great for children,
without any of them, offering a holiday away from the crowds, and the attractions
(distractions?) that accompany them. Cairncroft is set in an acre of land, laid to lawn and fenced. Younger children love to run around in the open space and there is a flat area of ground the size of a tennis court for a football pitch. The award winning Ravens Rock Forestry Trail is nearby (a two minute drive or ten minute walk) and offers hours of fun - damming the burn (not advisable when in spate), Pooh sticks, exploring, tree climbing etc. |

| The Trail itself is interesting and just about the right length for all but the youngest children. The Rosehall Trails forestry walk (a further five minute drive) has a Kids Corner section, which helps to keep their attention, allowing their parents to enjoy the walk! Bring your bikes, as there are a good number of places to ride - the Rosehall Trails include a dedicated Cycle Track, suitable for teenagers and older. | |

| The beaches on the east coast and west
coast can be reached in about 45 minutes, and have plenty of unspoiled
sand, and rockpools waiting to be explored. All are are set in beautiful
scenery. There's plenty of Highland wildlife to look out for, including highland cattle, deer, black-faced sheep (and lambs in the Spring), birds of prey, salmon leaping the Falls of River Shin and River Cassley, foxes, badgers, pine marten, otters, and a huge variety of sea birds at the coasts. |
