HILLWALKING

WALKING AMONG (BUT NOT UP) THE MOUNTAINS

Lochinver to Elphin
Ordnance Survey Landranger 15 Grid References NC 107219 (start) 230121 (finish)
This is a fine walk following a clear path and track, which passes between Suilven and Canisp, with some fine views of these mountains, and of Cul Mor and Cul Beag from the Elphin end (accross Cam Loch). Approximately 13 miles - allow six hours, to take in a lunch break, and plenty of pauses to take in the scenery. The well maintained bothy at Suileag at 150211 is worth a visit. There are a few river crossings, but all are straightforward, except in high spate.

This easy ten mile walk starts from the Ben Hope road at the sign for the Gubernuisgach Lodge, and follows a 4WD track through the mountains, via Bealach nam Meirleach, to West Merkland. 3 to 4 hours.
Blughasary to Culnacraig
Ordnance Survey Landranger 15 Grid References NC 135015 (start) 063040 (finish)
This path follows the rocky coast line cliffs beneath Ben Mor Coigach, and has some fine views out to sea and of Isle Martin. About seven miles, but allow a good three hours, due to nature of the path.
Linneraineach to Loch an Doire Dhuibh
Ordnance Survey Landranger 15 Grid References NC 128089 (start) 145103 (finish)
An easy walk on a good path, manageable with children, around the base of Cul Beag, and finishing at the Loch at the foot of Cul Mor. A relatively short walk of 4 or 5 miles (round trip), which provides a good feel for the Assynt wilderness.
